Washington traveled just up I-95 to Baltimore to take on the Ravens on Sunday. Commanders came into the game with a 4-1 record and a 4 game win streak while the Ravens splashed a 3-2 record. Nearly a perfect day for football in October. Washington didn't have it's primary running back Brian Robinson Jr, with a knee injury which stemmed from the Browns game. He did not practice all week.
The Commanders missed on a couple of opportunities that could have swung the game such as a missed field goal before half time and scoring a TD at the start of the 2nd half of the game. The defense did not help either with not being able to contain Zay Flowers who was all over the field for the Ravens. The 30-23 loss dropped the Commanders to 4-2 but the Ravens exposed the work that still needs to be done in Washington.
Jayden Daniels' Snapshot
Against the Ravens, Jayden Daniels showcased flashes of brilliance, displaying his dual-threat capabilities and poise under pressure. However, facing a relentless Ravens defense, Daniels encountered challenges, leading to a solid performance in an intense matchup. In a game of back and forth, Daniels showed his ability to lead the offense and keep the Commanders in the game.
Daniels may be just a rookie, but his ability on the field is years ahead of where he should be. His ability is giving Washington the hope that many others have not been able to do. It's a great start to a great career for Daniels and the Commanders.
Impact of Jonathan Allen's Season-Ending Injury
The news of Jonathan Allen's season-ending injury strikes a blow to the Commanders' defense. As a key playmaker and leader on the team, Allen's absence will undoubtedly be felt on the field. His ability to disrupt opposing offenses and provide crucial support to the defense leaves a significant void that the Commanders must address moving forward. This really means Jer'Zhan Newton and Phidarius Mathis need to fill the void and provide the effort and production Allen provided.
Ultimately, the defense needs to play better on pass defense. Too many big plays are being let go and that also comes from the pass rush being stagnant. The man to man press coverage is lacking any disruption and the most zone coverages are leaving a lot of open holes and missed coverages which lead to these big plays.
NFC East Standings Review
As the Commanders navigate through a challenging season, the NFC East standings offer a glimpse into the competitive landscape within the division. With each game crucial in the race for the top spot, Washington must capitalize on opportunities to climb the rankings and assert their dominance. The battle for supremacy in the NFC East promises thrilling matchups ahead, keeping fans on the edge of their seats as teams vie for playoff contention.
Even with the loss, the Commanders remain in first place in the NFC East.
Washington Commanders in NFL Power Rankings
For the first time in a long time, the Commanders have been positioned near the top of the Power Rankings across the board. Even after this loss, the league and analysts are seeing the promise the Commanders are showing. The schedule does get a bit easier moving forward with Carolina, Chicago, New York Giants, Tennessee, and the remainder of the NFC East.
All told, Sunday was another strong showing by Jayden Daniels and the offense, with the 30-23 loss being more of an indictment on the defense allowing big plays all game. This is clearly the biggest issue with Washington right now. Without a viable pass rush or the ability to create turnovers (plural), the Commanders are going to struggle against the league's higher-caliber offenses, especially after the reported season-long loss of DT Jonathan Allen.
